My online bookstore, Compass Books: Explore a World of Great Reads, is finally under development, and I’ll be posting more info here as I build out the site, but you can go ahead and check out some of the books I’ve added to my shelves thus far at Compass Books Specialty Bookshop.
The BookShop platform was developed and launched as a way to support small independent bookstores and indie authors, with books being shipped directly from Ingram, the world’s largest book distributor. If you buy books through BookShop rather than through Amazon, a significant portion of the profits go to support small independent bookstores, plus indie authors can promote their own books as well as make a small commission on books purchased through their online bookstores.
The attempt here is to effectively compete with Amazon for online books sales, and BookShop believes that decentralizing the industry to indie bookstores and indie authors, and any/all other book advocates who want to join the fun is the best way to break Amazon’s virtual monopoly on online book sales.
From the BookShop website:
“Bookshop is an online bookstore with a mission to financially support local, independent bookstores. We believe that bookstores are essential to a healthy culture. They’re where authors can connect with readers, where we discover new writers, where children get hooked on the thrill of reading that can last a lifetime. They’re also anchors for our downtowns and communities.
As more and more people buy their books online, we wanted to create an easy, convenient way for you to get your books and support bookstores at the same time.
If you want to find a specific local bookstore to support, find them on our map and they’ll receive the full profit off your order. Otherwise, your order will contribute to an earnings pool that will be evenly distributed among independent bookstores (even those that don’t use Bookshop).”
“By design, we give away over 75% of our profit margin to stores, publications, authors and others who make up the thriving, inspirational culture around books! We hope that Bookshop can help strengthen the fragile ecosystem and margins around bookselling and keep local bookstores an integral part of our culture and communities.”
So, if you’d like to support small, independent bookstores, or help support indie authors (such as myself), please consider doing your online book shopping through my specialty bookshop Compass Books, as the profits are shared with both.
Though I currently have a limited selection in my new store (see images below a sampling of what you’ll find there), over time I’ll be adding many more books and lists, and enhancing the site and selections, so be sure to check back regularly, and see what’s new!
Thanks, and I’ll see y’all there!
(And yes, I included some of my own books in my shop, initially just to see if the platform would accept them…and it did! So why not? After all, I’m promoting books in general, and supporting independent bookstores across the nation through my shop, I might as well promote my own books in the process, right?)
