I believe that many (or even most) people don’t understand what the 2014 Bundy Ranch standoff was actually about. In fact, I’ve actually witnessed someone ignorantly say “they just don’t want to pay their taxes”…!
Admittedly, I myself was not highly knowledgeable of all the details of the incident. My essential understanding was that for generations the Bundy Ranch has paid their grazing fees to the county, until the federal government, after illegally (unconstitutionally) seizing the land and putting it under the control of the Bureau Of Land Management (1946?), then in 1993 increased their restrictions on grazing—apparently, to help protect the desert tortoise—and demanded the Bundy Ranch pay a fee to continue grazing on the land, which they refused to pay, but continued grazing their cattle anyway.
Understanding that the federal government is not the rightful or legal owner of the land, the Bundy Ranch steadfastly refuses to pay fees to the feds.
That was my limited understanding, anyway.
But then more recently, I stumbled across the following video, which helps explain not only the Bundy Ranch standoff, but the 2016 Oregon Standoff as well, which also involved Ammon Bundy.
The documentary was produced by Gavin Seim, and narrated by Ammon Bundy while he was in jail. I think it’s well worth taking a half hour out of your busy day to watch:
I think it’s important for people to know and understand what both of these standoffs with the feds were all about; I think it’s important for people to know and understand how far outside the legal limits of the U.S. Constitution the federal government has strayed; and I think it’s important for people to know and understand how much of their rights, liberty, property, wealth—and even their very lives—are now threatened by authoritarian government overreach, on every level, as we are seeing not only across the country, but around the world today.
