Hoja Nueva: Q1 2025 Progress Report

Lots of exciting stuff happening!

I’ve written often about the wonderful work of Samantha Zwicker and her rescue center Hoja Nueva, where they rescue, rehabilitate, and either rewild or preserve endangered wildlife in the Amazon rain forests of Peru, including wildcats (watch the documentary Wildcat on Amazon Prime Video for a better understanding of what they do).

This week I received their quarterly progress report, and there have been some noteworthy events:

  • They were featured in GEO and Brigitte in Germany (download the articles here), and in an episode of ZDF/X Terra’s “Fascination Earth with Hannah Emde (their segment begins around the 29:30 mark).
  • They’ve rescued eleven animals so far this year, including two baby ocelots who were victims of the illegal pet trade. With expert care and time, they hope to give them a second chance at a wild future.
  • They’ve released two green anacondas back into the wild—rescued from an illegal zoo in Puerto Maldonado, which they helped shut down last year—marking the first time green anacondas have been reintroduced in Peru.
  • They’re breaking ground on the first dog and cat rescue center in Madre de Dios, which will not only provide care and rehoming for vulnerable animals but will also support public health initiatives to reduce disease transmission between wildlife, domestic animals, and people.
  • They’re about to make history, as they prepare to release their jaguar Artemis. After months of preparation, careful monitoring, and rehabilitation, she will become the first jaguar in Peru to be released back into the wild after being raised in captivity.

All this is just the tip of the iceberg, there’s much more going on at Hoja Nueva—so head on over to their website and check it out! And keep in mind that, being non-profit, they rely on donations to do this important work (they also have an online store where you can purchase merchandise to help them out and get cool stuff in return!).

So please consider helping them out if you can:
