On the morning of March 31, tragedy struck Long Island when Happy Cat Sanctuary caught fire, eventually burning to the ground. The owner & founder, Christopher Arsenault, lost his life while running back inside the burning structure trying to free the cats.
Though many cats perished, over 200 cats were rescued and are in the process of being transferred, and are in need of medical care, vaccinating, and micro-chipping in preparation for adoption.
Lisa Jeager, Founder & CEO of Jaeger’s Run Animal Rescue Inc., has organized a fundraiser to help care for/re-home the hundreds of surviving cats. She has posted a video update on Facebook explaining what they’re doing, how progress is going, and where the money’s going.
UPDATE 6/7/25:
Organizer Lisa Jeager has posted the following update:
“Since the fire, we have secured 325 cats from the Medford sanctuary. Every one of those cats was fully vetted, vaccinated, snap tested medically assessed and microchipped. On Sunday June 1st The cats remaining in our care were placed in a free roaming 4500 ft² indoor sanctuary. On Wednesday June 4th we brought back 125 cats from the upstate Sanctuary. These cats will be fully vetted and will join their family in the indoor sanctuary once they are all healthy enough. At that time we will begin to look for land here on Long Island to build the sanctuary that Chris always dreamed of. The money raised is going towards our vet bills, supplies, rent for the current sanctuary and to purchase the land and build an indoor outdoor sanctuary here. Thank you to all of our supporters while we continue the work that Chris was so passionate about. Your prayers are also requested because only God could have gotten us to where we are today!”
Please consider joining us in this fundraiser (as of this update, they are 98% there…can anyone help them to the finish line?) If so, thanks!
