Hoja Nueva Has Taken On 6 New Rescues

3k 0

Once again, Hoja Nueva is saving endangered animals in the Peruvian rainforest, this time taking on six new rescues: a two-month-old ocelot barely clinging to life, weighing only 870 grams (less than 2 lbs!) and needing urgent care:

And five other animals from an illegal zoo that was shut down: one young male tayra, two female coatis, one juvenile male margay, and one tiny oncilla kitten weighing only 500 grams (barely over 1 lb!):

Due to their dire conditions and mistreatment, they are all in need of urgent care.

From Hoja Nueva‘s Founder & Co-Directer Samantha Zwicker:

Baby Ocelot Barely Clinging To Life

Two weeks ago, we received a call that changed everything. A two-month-old ocelot, barely clinging to life, needed urgent care. Thanks to a historic first—LATAM airlines allowed a veterinarian to carry him in the cabin—Bobito made it safely to Hoja Nueva.

When he arrived, Bobito weighed only 870 grams. Just one week later, he’s already grown to 1.4 kilos. But his battle isn’t over—he’s fighting parasites and severe gut issues. He’s safe for now in our nursery clinic, but he’ll need ongoing medical care and, eventually, his own outdoor enclosure.

New Arrivals From An Illegal Zoo

As Bobito settles in, another urgent rescue is already unfolding. Authorities in Satipo, Peru, shut down an illegal zoo holding dozens of wild animals. Many didn’t survive—but five fragile survivors are being transferred to Hoja Nueva as soon as possible [listed above].

For these animals, the journey itself is dangerous—9 hours by car, flights to Puerto Maldonado, and another 3 hours into the jungle. Every step brings risk. But together, we can bring them safely home.

Why We Need You
This is one of the most urgent rescues in our history. We need immediate support to cover:

• Safe transport and custom-built travel crates
• Full medical exams, fecal and blood tests, and treatments
• Critical nursery supplies for Bobito and the baby oncilla
• At least one new outdoor enclosure for the margay and future rescues
• Food, enrichment, and ongoing care until they can be released back to the wild

These rescues can’t wait. Lives are at stake right now.

Every major rescue we’ve ever done has been made possible by supporters like you. With your help, we’ll once again turn crisis into survival—and survival into freedom.

These rescues are fragile. Many animals never survive the long journey from confiscation to sanctuary. But with your help, they will. We urgently need funds for their transport, medical care, and safe enclosures. Our goal is $6,000 to get them here and keep them alive.

So as you can see, Hoja Nueva needs our help saving these precious lives! Every little bit helps, and all donations will be matched, which will double your impact! So please consider donating today! And I thank y’all in advance! ~ Rand
