Studying Multiple Scriptures Side By Side

233 0

Often a book in my studies will have footnotes or references to biblical scripture. Currently, I’m including The Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis as part of my morning studies, and it’s permeated with notations—not only citing the bible, but other profound texts as well—but a vast majority are from the bible.

Well, I own a Parallel Bible (aka comparative study bible), which lists the texts of four common translations side by side: King James Version, New International Version, New American Standard Bible, and Amplified Bible.

So when I come across a biblical reference, I then read the passage in all four translations, so I can enhance my understanding/application of the cited scripture:

But doing so also became rather burdensome; the PB is big and heavy, and I’m usually reading at least 2 books in my morning studies, so rotating the books around while trying to study is disruptive, as is trying to find the passage in question in the PB, usually by consulting the table of contents to first find the book (even with the four gospels bookmarked), then the chapter/verse:

Well, I keep my laptop at the ready during my studies as an aid for looking up terms, word definitions, people referenced, that sort of thing. So I began to wonder: is there such a Parallel Bible or comparative bible online, wherein I could just type the passage in the search field and have it come up automatically?

Well, turns out there is! And even better!

So Parallel Plus by TheBible.org not only displays—not four, as in my Parallel Bible, but SEVEN!—different translations of the scriptures, side by side, with a search field at the top to find the passage! And better yet: you can change all seven of the translations to whichever you want, in whatever order you want, from a huge archive, displayed in drop-down menus:

Anyway, this was such a helpful aid in my studies, I felt compelled to share it, with the hope that someone out there finds it helpful too!
