I recently read the following Truth somewhere online, and it resonated with me, thought I’d share (reworked the language a bit, but the principle remains intact):
Sometimes people use the word respect in a way that means to treat someone like a human being, and sometimes people use the term respect in a way that means to treat someone as an authority.
And sometimes, people who are used to being treated as an authority say: “If you don’t respect me, I won’t respect you.”
But what they actually mean is: “If you don’t respect me as an authority, I won’t respect you as a human being.”
And this is never acceptable behavior.
