I have often said “The world will never be free, because people simply cannot mind their own business.”
Jiddu Krishnamurti once said, “It is no measure of health to be well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society.”
The late philosopher and renowned psychonaut Terence McKenna once said “The cost of sanity, in this society, is a certain level of alienation.”
Today, the advent of the Internet, cell phone networks, social media, and the prevalence of digital cameras everywhere has created a unique condition in human history: for the first time ever, the natural insulating barriers of geography and privacy—forcing people to mind their own business, and better enabling people to secure their own privacy, as well as inducing general ignorance of the beliefs and opinions of irrelevant others—has suddenly been removed.
Thus, the chaos and vitriol of social media, the news media, governing institutions and other institutions of authority, etc.
To curtail this, somehow people are going to have to consciously re-learn how to mind their own business, and to secure their own privacy, and particularly to keep their private business and affairs to themselves—as well as how to disregard the opinions of irrelevant others about them, their ideas, their choices, their business, their relationships, their work, their lives…
In other words: In this new, 24/7 universally interconnected world, people need to learn to re-establish an appropriate degree of disconnection.
So…disconnect
