VIDEO: Reversing (Or Even Eliminating) Type 2 Diabetes Through Proper Nutrition

My brother and I run a pool & spa service company in Las Vegas, and some time ago we picked up a new client and spent a couple of hours at his property inspecting his pool and equipment and getting everything set up and functioning properly.

Toward the end of our visit, I got to talking to the owner, and he happened to mention he’s 62, and is struggling with type 2 diabetes. I probed a little further, and turns out it’s adult onset T2D, i.e., most likely the result of insulin resistanceInsulin resistance (IR) is a condition in which cells either fail to respond normally to the hormone insulin, or down-regulate insulin receptors, in response to hyperinsulinemia (excess levels of insulin). , typically brought on by decades of high glucose diet (sugar and refined carbs) coupled with persistently high insulin levels in response.

He went on to tell me his doctor’s been soaking him and his insurance company for tons of money and putting him on all sorts of expensive meds, trying this, trying that, changing the dosages, but he’s not getting any better—but when I asked him about changes to his diet, he said nobody has said word one to him about proper, healthy nutrition!

I then spent half an hour talking to him about nutrition: sugar, carbs, refined carbs, glucose, insulin, insulin resistance, low-carb diet, keto, intermittent fasting, grains, GMOs, autoimmune, etc., and explained some of the biochemestry and evolutionary science behind it all. I then gave him some prominent websites such as Mark’s Daily Apple (since rebranded as Primal Kitchen), and Wheat Belly (since rebranded as Dr. Davis Infinite Health) to check out. And, I told him I’d be there every week to service his pool if he has any questions.

It was such a wonderful feeling, how excited the man was by the time I left! The possibility of being able to get off all the meds and the supplemental insulin simply by changing his diet to proper nutrition was very exciting to him, and he said he’s gonna give it a try!”

We saw him sometime later, and he said he was now on a keto dietThe ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that prompts the body to burn fat rather than glucose., had already lost close to 20 lbs, and was doing/feeling much better! I imagine it won’t be long before he’s off the meds entirely, once his glucose/insulin levels have been reduced long enough to enable his cells regain their insulin sensitivity.

For more about this, the following video by Dr. Sarah Hallberg, medical director at Virta Health and medical director and founder of the Indiana University–Arnett Health Medical Weight Loss Program is a good, basic discussion about how reducing or eliminating refined carbs (and, of course, sugar) can reverse insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and the resultant obesity and other health issues.
