VIDEO: The Hoja Nueva Center Needs Our Help

427 0

I’ve written twice before about the Hoja Nueva Center located in the Peruvian rain forest, and the work that founder Samantha Zwicker is doing to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-wild displaced and abused animals there, particularly the wild cats (see “Rewilding” at the Hoja Nueva center in the Peruvian Amazon and An Exciting New Announcement From the Hoja Nueva Center); you can also watch the now award-winning documentary Wildcat on Amazon Prime Video, which I highly recommend.

I strongly believe in, and support her efforts and those of the center and the other workers there.

Well now, they’re attempting to close down the last illicit “zoo” (wildlife trafficking operation) and adopt the remaining animals there for rehab, and eventual rewilding for those capable (or a healthy, happy sanctuary home for those that aren’t).

She explains:

“This zoo is the largest of its kind in our region. It houses up to 100 animals at a time and is constantly bringing in new animals. They do this to replace the ones that have died due to neglect and malnutrition. This zoo is in violation of many laws in Peru, but has existed in a legal grey area. In conjunction with the government, we have finally gotten the legal approval to act, removing the animals from the zoo and effectively ensuring that the premises is permanently closed. To do this we need to expand our infrastructure and create several specialized enclosures to be able to provide the level of care these animals will need. We are confident that our specialized methods of rehabilitation will be able to provide a second chance at a life in the wild for many of them.”

So obviously, they are in desperate need of funds to accomplish this noble and highly worthy goal. I have personally scheduled a donation into my upcoming financial schedule, and I wouldn’t ask others to contribute if I wasn’t myself. I am, and will be donating as much as I reasonably can. I hope that others will, too.
